How EVDuel Calculates Charging Stops

When you plan a route on EVDuel, our algorithm does a lot of heavy lifting behind the scenes. Here's how it works:

1. Understanding Your Vehicle

Every EV in our database comes with detailed specifications:

  • Battery capacity - How much energy your car can store (kWh)
  • Real-world range - Based on WLTP data adjusted for highway driving
  • Charging curve - How fast your car charges at different battery levels
  • Maximum charging speed - The peak DC charging rate

2. Route Analysis

We use real road data to calculate:

  • Total distance and elevation changes
  • Highway vs. city driving segments
  • Speed limits affecting consumption

3. The Charging Stop Algorithm

Our algorithm follows these principles:

  1. Never arrive below 10% battery - Safety margin for unexpected detours
  2. Charge to 80% maximum - Beyond 80%, charging slows dramatically
  3. Minimize total time - Sometimes two short stops beat one long stop
  4. Use the fastest available chargers - We know which networks work best with your car

4. Network Intelligence

Not all chargers are equal. A Tesla at a Supercharger performs differently than at an Ionity station. We factor in:

  • Plug compatibility (CCS, CHAdeMO, Tesla)
  • Network-specific charging curves
  • Real-world reliability data
