Virtual Electric Car Racing

Planning Your First Long-Distance EV Trip

Range anxiety is real - but it doesn't have to ruin your trip. With proper planning, EV road trips can be just as enjoyable as traditional ones. Here's everything you need to know.

Before You Go

1. Know Your Car's Real Range

Your car's advertised WLTP range is optimistic. For highway driving, expect 15-25% less. EVDuel uses real-world data to give you accurate predictions.

2. Plan Your Charging Stops

Use EVDuel to simulate your route before you leave. You'll see:

  • Where you need to stop
  • How long each stop will take
  • What your battery level will be at each point

3. Have Backup Charging Apps

Download apps for multiple charging networks:

  • Ionity
  • Tesla (if you have a Tesla or CCS adapter)
  • Fastned
  • Your local network (EnBW, Shell Recharge, etc.)

On the Road

4. The 80% Rule

Never charge above 80% on a road trip unless you absolutely need to. Charging from 80-100% takes as long as 10-80% on most EVs. It's almost always faster to charge twice to 80% than once to 100%.

5. Arrive with Buffer

Plan to arrive at chargers with at least 15-20% battery. Traffic, detours, and weather can all impact your range.

6. Use Charging Time Wisely

20-30 minute charging stops are perfect for:

  • Bathroom breaks
  • Grabbing food
  • Stretching your legs
  • Checking messages

Using EVDuel for Planning

Step 1: Enter Your Route

Type your start and end cities. We'll calculate the distance and optimal path.

Step 2: Select Your Vehicle

Choose your exact EV model. We have 300+ vehicles with accurate real-world data.

Step 3: Run the Simulation

Watch your virtual car complete the journey. You'll see every charging stop, how long you'll spend there, and your battery level throughout.

Step 4: Compare Alternatives

Wondering if a different route is faster? Or how your friend's Tesla would do on the same trip? Add a second vehicle and race them!

Pro Tips

  • Winter trips: Add 20-30% to your charging estimates. Cold weather significantly reduces range.
  • Mountain routes: Going up uses more energy, but you'll regenerate on the way down.
  • First trip: Pick a route with plenty of charger options. You can optimize later once you're confident.
